Residential Curbside Pickup and Recycling

Sanitation pickup is efficiently organized on a weekly basis for each designated area within the City of Ashland. Detailed information regarding the pickup schedule for specific streets can be obtained from the City Services Office. Additionally, a comprehensive map displaying the pickup routes can be accessed by clicking on the designated green button below.

For the disposal of large items, we kindly request that you contact the City Services Office to schedule a pickup. Our dedicated team will coordinate the appropriate arrangements for the removal of such items.

Weekly Trash Pickup Guidelines

When
Residential curbside pickup will be done once a week.

Place items for pickup at the curb by 7:30 a.m. on the day of pick-up and, if the trash is in a container 33 gallon or smaller with a secure lid, it may be placed at the curb after 6:00 p.m. the prior evening.

Containers, bags, and any material not picked up must be removed from the curb by 6:00 p.m. on your pick up day.

Where
Household bagged garbage should be placed curbside, in front of your residence or designated location, as determined by property owner or resident and Sanitation Department

 What

  • All household garbage shall be BAGGED and TIED

  • In trash bags no larger than 33 gallon and weigh less than 50 lbs.

  • 6 bag limit per household per pickup (33 gallon or smaller)

  • Additional bags will be picked up at a cost of $1.00 per bag

Holiday
Scheduled days which fall on a holiday will be picked up on our next business day for curbside pickup. If a holiday falls on a Monday and your scheduled day is Monday, your trash will be picked up on Tuesday. If holidays fall where we are off 2 consecutive days, (for example, Thanksgiving) the first day off will be picked up on the following Monday and the second day off will be picked up on the following Tuesday.

Senior Service
Senior Citizens, 65 or older, and physically handicapped persons, may request that the Sanitation Department carry household garbage from the house at a predetermined location, i.e. carryout. Limit 2 bags household garbage. Recycling may also be requested to be carried out. Call office to request this assistance to this number 419-289-9791.

Large Item Pickup

Large pickups may be scheduled through the Sanitation Office, 419-289-9791, at times other than Spring Cleanup. The rate of $10.00 per cycled hopper, which is one cycle of the rear sweep blade, applies for this service. Items must be reasonably handled by two adult persons and fit into the rear of the packer truck or hopper.  Only approved items will be picked up. Items to be picked up are to be placed curbside.

Demolition & Construction Debris

Demolition and construction debris pickups may be scheduled through the Sanitation Office, 419-289-9791. The rate of $15.00 per cycled hopper, which is one cycle of the rear sweep blade, applies for this service. Items must be reasonably handled by two adult persons and fit into the rear of the packer truck or hopper.  Only approved items will be picked up, such as drywall, brick, lumber, shingles, and concrete pieces. Items to be picked up are to be placed curbside.

Curbside Recycling

When
Residential curbside recycling pickup will be done once a week, but not on the same day as trash pick up. Please see map for schedule information.

Place items for pickup at the curb by 7:30 a.m. on the day of pick-up  (after 6:00 p.m. the prior evening).

Containers, bags, and any material not picked up must be removed from the curb by 6:00 p.m. on your recycling pick up day.

 What
Acceptable items and how to prepare them:

  • Newspaper – Put in paper bags or tie in bundles, ad slicks can stay in newspapers.

  • Magazines – Same as newspaper.

  • Books (soft & hard back) – Same as newspaper.

  • Misc. Paper/shredded paper – Put in paper or plastic grocery bags or clear or blue trash bags.

  • Non-corrugated cardboard/boxboard/cereal boxes/Christmas clothing boxes/12 – 24 pack beverage containers – Flatten and tie in bundles or flatten and put inside other same type cardboard containers.

  • Corrugated cardboard - Flatten and tie in bundles or flatten and put inside other same type cardboard containers.

  • Aluminum/steel/tin cans & plastic containers – These items may all go in the same bag. Rinse out and drain food cans. Cans may be crushed to save space but it is not required. Aerosol cans may be included if empty. Milk jugs, water jugs, detergent, bleach & fabric softener bottles, 5 gal. buckets, with recycling code #2 on the bottom, and soda & water bottles with recycling code #1 on bottom. Rinse containers & drain, remove caps, flatten to save space. No need to remove labels or rings. Do not include oil bottles or other containers even if #2 appears on the bottom. Do not include any other types of plastic. Bag & tie.

  • Some plastic containers, such as pop bottles, do not have a number on them. However, they are recyclable.

    Please separate different classes (numbered categories) of items.

  • Plastic grocery bags/shrink & stretch film – No garbage or trash bags, no glossy finish bags – flat finish, see-through type only. Bag & tie.

Recycling - Glass

1674 Cleveland Ave

The City does not do curbside pickup for glass, however, glass recycling is now available at a drop-off area at 1674 Cleveland Ave. We will accept all colors glass jars and bottles: clear, green, brown, blue.

Acceptable Items:

  • Glass food containers

  • Beer and wine bottles

  • All food containers must be rinsed. Caps and lids are to be removed and recycled in appropriate containers at the drop off location, Sanitation Department, 1674 Cleveland Ave. Dump your glass into the appropriately marked bin and discard trash, cardboard, etc. where indicated. Labels on jars & bottles do not need to be removed. 

Please note: Light bulbs, mirror glass, window glass, ceramic, crystal, canning jars & drinking glasses CANNOT BE recycled at this time.

Yard Waste

When
Yard waste pick up can be scheduled year-round, with pick up arranged by calling (419) 289-8728.

Place items for pickup at the curb by 7:30 a.m. on the day of pick-up. Please keep yard debris out of the street.

Containers, bags, and any material not picked up must be removed from the curb by 6:00 p.m. on your pick up day.

Regular yard waste pick up will begin in May and continue through the end of October. Yard waste pick-up will take place every week on the same day as scheduled recycling pick-up.

 What

  • Biodegradable approved bags may be purchased at area stores.

  • To be picked up, each bag must have a sticker. Stickers may be purchased at the Utility Billing Office, 206 Claremont Ave., or Farm & Home Hardware, at a cost of $1.25 per sticker, effective March 6, 2013.

Acceptable Yard Waste Includes:

  • Grass clippings

  • Leaves

  • Flowers

  • Hedge trimmings

  • Small branches cut to not protrude from bag

  • Only approved bags with stickers will be collected

Items Not Accepted as Yard Waste:

  • Rocks

  • Dirt

  • Stones

  • Building materials

  • Plastic

  • Trash

Responsibility

Property owners are responsible for incurred charges in all cases.

  • Containers, bags, or any material put out for scheduled pickup which are not in accordance general guidelines, will be picked up and billed in accordance with large pick up rate.

  • Garbage left curbside on any day other than  scheduled pickup day will be picked up. Additional charges will be added  on your monthly bill.

  • Garbage cans which are left curbside, past 6:00 p.m. on pick up day, may incur additional charges which will be put on property owner's monthly bill.
