Roseboro Field Plaque

On Thursday, September 12, the City of Ashland dedicated the little league baseball field in Cahn Grove Park as “Roseboro Field” in honor of Ashland’s very own Major League Baseball star John “Junior” Roseboro.

City officials, community members, and family of Roseboro gathered to share remarks about Roseboro’s impact on baseball and his hometown. Tony Roseboro, nephew to the late John Roseboro, spoke at the ceremony and noted that the naming of the field may be one of his uncle’s greatest honors.

The ceremony also included the unveiling of a bronze plaque as tribute to Roseboro that reads:

John “Junior” Roseboro | 1933 - 2002

Born in Ashland, Ohio, John Roseboro was an accomplished professional baseball player and coach. He played collegiately at Central State University before being signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers. He played catcher in the major leagues from 1957-1970, mostly for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was a four-time All-Star and considered one of the best defensive catchers of his era, winning two Gold Glove Awards. He played in four World Series and was a member of three championship teams.

We’d also like to thank Ashland citizens Ralph and Betty Jo Tomassi for making this important project possible.
